Reading Tips for Parents

My October topic, for those of you who arrived at my blog for the first time today, is READING.  Check out the main blog for Ten Tips for Parents. Today, I volunteered at my child’s school for their Calgary Reads launch.  How impressive! Many, many volunteers were on hand to read picture books to a small group of Grade One or Grade Two students and to enjoy the love of reading together. In addition to the cozy reading groups, every child got a public library card and a bag with one non-fiction and one fiction picture book, a fuzzy book worm, and a few other goodies.  What a wonderful celebration of the world of literacy.  I got the following tips from the Calgary Reads Parent Handbook.

Reading aloud to your child:

  • provides opportunities for them to hear stories above their reading ability
  • nurtures a love of reading
  • stretches their imaginations
  • helps them learn about the world around them
  • expands their vocabulary , listening and comprehension skills
  • gives children a bonding experience through the shared enjoyment of readin a book together

Stay tuned for more reading tips throughout the month of October.

Happy Reading!
